Artist Statement: Manipulating Visual Information
I am interested in information and how it progresses and transforms. Logic and basic formulations are inherent within my work. My art deals with a variety of semi abstract forms that link to form a language. To achieve this I use the computer as a tool for manipulating my visual information. Working digitally has the advantage of generating many different possibilities in my visual vocabulary. The two-dimensional images generated act as a reference for the three-dimensional. Using drawing, painting, sculpture and vinyl, I transfer this virtual state to a more tangible one, albeit one of flux. The forms reference toys, graphic design, and landscape, with aspects of industrial design and music. Often they allude to a child’s world; the toy-like forms and pastel colors help produce a sense of innocence and vulnerability. The objects I make have a high degree of finish, so they appear fabricated. Fabrication relates to product, which in turn stresses consumerism and the desire to possess. The purchase power of consumer America again speaks of this movement and transformation. I want the work to appear functional, not in terms of the object actually operating, but in relation to the expectation of its progression and mutation. I incorporate my vocabulary of forms into environments so that they may co-exist as separate and dependent, blatant and obscure.
