Nikki Painter
I make drawings to explore my ideas about the manmade and natural worlds. I think about “manmade” as a broad term applying to everything from architecture to institutions, rational thought, science, and social constructs. When I refer to the “natural” world, I am thinking about nature such as organic life, but I also think about “natural” modes of perceiving, via the five senses (with an emphasis on the visual), intuition and emotion.
In describing these worlds, the vocabulary I use is specific to me. I document personal experience via mark making and selected imagery. In the work, disjointed pieces of architectural structures are reconfigured to create useless, fragile structures indicative of man-made constructs. Colorful, decorative marks and patterns reference the natural, sensual, nonverbal world. These worlds butt up against one another, and they also ebb and flow, alternately giving way to their counterparts.
